Near Mount Whitney, CA | 2018
Mount Muir, a 14,019 ft (4,273 m) peak, is the tallest peak on the horizon on the slight right in this photo. It gets significantly less attention than its neighbor, Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48 states. The summit of Muir can be reached by are a short side-hike off of the Whitney trail by anyone with decent climbing skills. Start by going up the snowy gully going diagonally up-left in this photo to reach Trail Crest at 13,700 ft elevation. Continue on for about 0.75 miles, and pay special attention to spot the turn off from the Whitney Trail where you can see the daunting summit of Mount Muir. As soon as you turn off of the class 1 walking path of the Whitney Trail, the trail immediately changes to a class 2 scramble. The final push to the summit involves a short class 3 climb with a few moves that are sure to get your blood pumping.
