Mount Whitney, CA | 2019

An early start is important when steep snow slopes are involved to minimize avalanche risk and rockfall danger. After a very snowy winter from 2018-2019, the Mount Whitney trail that is low-risk in summer required snowshoes, crampons, an ice ax, and winter mountaineering skills to make a safe trip during this late-May ascent. The reward? I had the typically crowded summit all to myself. This photo was taken from near Trail Crest at 13,700 ft elevation looking down towards Trail Camp, the popular overnight spot at 12,000 ft elevation for Mount Whitney hikers.
